If someone tells you that there are fundamental differences between sales and marketing for MLM recruiting you may be surprised and think they are basically the same thing. Well, you would be incorrect as there are ‘pull’ and ‘push’ techniques. Knowing the difference between the two may be the deciding factor in whether or not you have success in your network marketing venture.

Marketing yourself or a product is defined as a ‘pull’ or getting a prospect curious to know more. Marketing something means to have a potential consumer excited to know more about something or to ask for more information.

Think, for example, about a gift. You are interested in what is in that box; you want to open it to know what it contains or has to offer. Therefore the box has a sort of ‘pull’, it peaks your interest. This is a simple illustration of marketing.

Let’s now see how marketing works in your business. If someone lets you know that they are sick of their job you can create a ‘pull’ or curiosity by asking, “Do you have any idea how to change your situation?” You may get the reply, “I’m not sure,” you can then respond, “I may be able to help you find a solution.” This is marketing; you are creating a ‘pull’ or curiosity. If your prospect doesn’t want more information, they probably never will.

Now let’s look at a sales example or the ‘push’. You ask someone, “What are you up to this weekend?” and he replies, “Nothing”. You then reply “Terrific, I want to come and discuss a business opportunity with you”. You have now just used a sales technique or a ‘push’ and your prospect may not be very responsive as they could feel cornered.

The fundamental differences between sales and marketing while MLM recruiting is defined as this: being an expert or advisor vs. a salesperson. When you’re an advisor or expert, you help solve a predicament; you ask your prospect the right questions to define what he needs fixed before offering an answer, ‘the pull’. A salesperson tries to get you to buy what they have whether you need it or not, the ‘push’.

When you learn to create the ‘pull’, you understand the fundamental differences between sales and marketing. If you create curiosity and place yourself in the position of the expert or advisor, then that prospect will want to know more. Using marketing instead of sales could be the difference between success and failure for MLM recruiting.
